At a very special event in Florida, 40 senior shelter dogs paraded down a red carpet into a prom-themed block party. The dogs wore all kinds of fancy outfits to attract the eye of potential adopters—and six of them, so far, have found forever homes thanks to the event.
13 animal rescues from the Tampa Bay area brought adoptable dogs to the event, ranging from 5 to 20 years in age. The prom was hosted by The Dog House in Safety Harbor. It was their first adoption event specifically for older dogs, but certainly won’t be the last.
“We wanted to have an event that not only included senior adoptables, but put the spotlight on them!” Kelli Chickos told This Dog’s Life.
Many families assume that the potential health issues with older dogs make them a poor choice for adoption. In reality, however, senior dogs typically come with great basic training, a solid temperament with no surprises, and a smoother transition into family life than what you typically find with a puppy or adolescent dog.
Here are some more awesome photos from the event.
