August is an important month, my furry friends. While cats (in their infinite wisdom) already know that International Cat Day is on August 8th, it’s worth reminding the doggos that National Dog Day occurs on August 26th. These are key days for both species, in which pet parents across the nation (and beyond) have the opportunity to reflect on just how much their pets mean to them.
These days, it’s a bond that’s more important than ever. After all, you very well may be the brightest spot in your mom or dad’s day during this time.
Broad strokes, here are the major highlights for the kitties and puppers this month:
- The Aquarius full moon on August 3rd is a time of reflection, where you can assess your goals for the last full month of summer.
- You’ll decide to embrace your inner diva and live large on August 4th, when Mercury enters Leo. After all, you work hard, so you should totally play hard.
- Venus, planet of love and beauty, enters tender Cancer on August 7th. If you’re being trained or learning some new tricks, you may feel a little more sensitive, but try not to take any negative feedback you receive too seriously during this time.
- Rebellious planet Uranus starts its retrograde journey on August 15th in Taurus. This is a good time to take a walk on the wild side and show off your personality—people (and other pets) will take notice.
- The Leo new moon on August 18th is an ideal time to bring your dreams to reality. Meow it out and bark it up—when it comes to your aspirations, there’s a lot of possibility for you during this time.
- The Sun enters Virgo on August 22nd, allowing your analytical mind to make important and necessary decisions about mundane day-to-day life (feeding, napping, playing, walking, etc).

It’s important to mark your turf at home and to create a space that belongs solely to you. Push all of your toys to the corner of the room you wish to claim as your own on August 7th. At first, your parents will be a little confused about why you need your own private area—after all, you’re part of one big, happy family, right? But even individuals in the closest of families need alone time. They’ll eventually get the hint and leave you to unwind and relax on your own.
Quarantining for the past few months has been challenging for you, since you love being outside in nature. Being cooped up inside is beginning to stress you out, as you yearn to be outdoors—especially now. Make sure your pet parent gives you that room to roam, whether it’s on multiple walks a day, or just being there to open the door and let you outside. This is especially important on August 15th, when it’s advisable to be as direct and forthcoming as possible about your needs.
Your naturally optimistic self has been feeling a little pessimistic lately. Could your recent ‘tude be a harsh projection of your inner feelings? You might consider changing your outlook and starting to look on the bright side. It’s important to continue to seek pleasure in the simple things, whether it’s your daily walk or a romp at the dog park. If you try, you might be feeling better by August 18th, when the new moon promises to bring out a new, positive side of you. (PS: I know it’s hard these days, so hang in there!)
You are getting into the swing of things now that mom and dad have been working home for a while now; you know not to jump up on the laptop or scratch at the door during a Zoom meeting. Isn’t it time you had a special treat for all this good behavior? Make sure that your ‘rents treat you to your favorite snacks as a reward. They may even surprise you with a new toy (or better yet, a subscription box!) on August 7th to show their appreciation for being such a constant comfort to them during these intense times. Let yourself be pampered: you have earned it!
You’re feeling yourself this month. But, let’s be real, when are you not? You feel confident, which will make you want to be the poster pet for your special recognition holiday this month. After all, there’s no other cat or dog who’s finer than you are. Go on, take the stage while posing for cameras or any other time the opportunity arises: The world needs your confidence, pep, and love of life right now.
You may be a tad paranoid on August 4th, because you’re feeling like your besties are barking behind your back. Let me reassure you, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Your BFFs would never say anything negative about you: The love you! No spoilers, but the energy you’ve been picking up on might have something to do with a special event they could be planning for your birthday. Stand down, relax, and let yourself be delighted by the surprises to come.
You’ve had a temporary hiatus from socializing while sheltering in place with the fam; on August 7th, it’s time to rejoin the pack at the dog park. Your pals have missed you, and vice versa. Reconnection is soul-affirming, and you’ll be feeling the love and re-energized during the new moon on August 18th, when a chorus of familiar howls and yips greet you when you enter the dog run to play.
Jealousies in relationships will be felt on August 15th, mostly because your friends are envious of the gifts your parents showered you with to celebrate your special holiday this month. Don’t take their resentments to heart; your friends just wish they were being lavished with attention, affection, and presents the way you are. If you can, share your good fortune with others, and at the very least, strive to be generous in your spirit around others who are less fortunate.
You’re getting a little fed up with humans assuming that you want them to pet you all the time. Hello, it’s called boundaries! Before you communicate your annoyance with a bark or hiss, your mom or dad needs to know you’re more than just a plaything. A look can speak a million words on August 7th. If that doesn’t work immediately, give it a few days, focus on your needs and your own self-care, and see if they come around.
You’ve been making strides learning to love yourself, to not be afraid of your own shadow, and to bring more pep into your step these days. You’ll start to see the fruits of all this hard work during the new moon in Leo on August 18th. Later on, the last week of August is shaping up to be a very productive and positive time for you; you might even start to see yourself differently, when all that hard work turns into working it. Keep it up, you’re getting good at it.
Lazy afternoons spent at home are never a waste of time, especially when you have a lot on your inquisitive mind, pensive Aquarius. You are now in the mood to evolve on a deeper level. The road towards personal growth is hard, but you’re ready to lean into transformation—especially during the full moon on August 3rd and on August 26th when the sun shifts into Virgo. Remember to go with the flow, it’s all part of the celestial plan.
As a result of the full moon on August 3rd, you will be searching for the right way to express your views throughout the rest of the month. If you’re lucky, a fellow furry friend or animal expert will come along to help you release your inner voice and reach its potential on the 8th or 26th. Remember: Your voice matters, your voice counts, and a lot of cats and dogs can relate and identify with you.
