Frika the miniature pinscher is on the chubby side these days—and it helped save her life. As she headed into the backyard recently, she was interrupted by a very hungry bear. That’s right: a bear.
Owner Eric Vaughn was shocked when he saw the bear take a swipe at his dog. Frozen and terrified, he felt little Frika brush against his leg. Amazed that she’d escaped, he rushed her into the house with the bear following just inches behind.

The vet who treated Frika said her size saved her from a far worse injury. The curvy little girl’s extra padding shielded her organs from the bear’s claws, and she went home with just a dozen stitches.
