Don’t let the cold weather keep you or your dog down! Chilly temperatures are an excellent reason to keep your dog cozy, warm, and dry in a stylish outer layer such as a winter dog coat or jacket. L.L. Bean dog coat, the Mountain Classic Dog Parka, is one of our top five picks for dog coats and jackets in 2020.

(See the full list here, complete with a video roundup, product specs, and purchasing information.)

Whether your trails take you, this well-insulated, reversible, and dare we say, trendy, dog coat can come in handy for a variety of reasons, from helping your dog fight off the winter chill to repelling precipitation such as rain or snow.

Here’s our review.

L.L. Bean Dog Coat, Mountain Classic Dog Parka

The parka is a popular style from the respected outdoor outfitter. Weather-resistant and made from eco-friendly recycled polyester, this reversible coat has reflective piping for enhanced nighttime visibility and is generously insulated.

We tested it in size medium, and found it ran true to size (it fit a 40 pound border collie mix well, similarly to the dog pictured above, with the bottom not quite reaching the tailbone).

Featuring double velcro straps at the belly and neck for an extra secure fit, it’s a solid option for neighborhood walks, but not recommended for super active dogs as the shell, though well made, is not overly durable. Another thing to keep in mind is that although this dog coat is weather-resistant, it’s not entirely waterproof.

As with any piece of dog clothing, be sure to measure your dog before ordering to determine the best fit. If you’re not sure where to start, check out our handy guide, How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness, Clothes, and Costumes.

Note: We tested it in size medium on a small dog, a 16 pound mini poodle, as it looks and runs small. If you like this style, be sure to note the sizing and measure your dog. You might consider ordering one size up.
