Like clockwork every springtime, Snoop would get itchy bumps that were usually accompanied by ear infections. Long story short, after rounds of expensive antibiotics every year, we finally had him tested for dog skin allergies. Turns out Snoop Dogg was allergic to just about everything you can imagine. Weeds, grasses, pollen–pretty much everything your average seasonal allergy sufferer deals with. We couldn’t keep him inside all day long, of course, but even after we’d treat him with another round of medication, the problems always came back. After some research, I finally found a diet that Snoop seemed to respond well to.
I’m no veterinarian, and detecting and treating allergies is complicated stuff. But basically, allergies immune system overreactions that can be either environmental (pollens or dust mites), dietary (allergy to corn), or both. This is purely anecdotal, but in Snoop Dogg’s case, his allergies drastically improved when I put him on a completely raw diet, amusingly known as the B.A.R.F. diet. (The acronym stands for “biologically appropriate raw food”). It seemed that something was setting of a chain reaction and causing inflammation and skin eruptions. I’d tried many commercial hypoallergenic dog foods with minimal results. After Snoop went raw, his coat was much healthier, and his skin rashes and ear infections went away. Just like finding the right treatment options for human diseases, it took a lot of trial and error.
