The Barbour Dog Coat: Our Review

Don’t let the cold weather keep you or your dog down! Chilly temperatures are an excellent reason to keep your dog cozy, warm, and dry in a stylish outer layer like a winter dog coat or jacket. One popular choice is the Barbour Dog Coat, one of our top five picks for dog coats and jackets in 2020.

(See the full list here, complete with a video roundup, product specs, and purchasing information.)

Here’s our review.

Barbour Quilted Dog Coat

While not suitable for the extreme cold, for a simple, polished look, this lightweight jacket is just right for shoulder seasons. A simple velcro closure at the neck makes for easy on/off, while a buckle strap at the belly allows for a custom fit.

Barbour is known for its quality craftsmanship, and fans of the brand will see this carried through here; the jacket’s thoughtful materials include a durable polyester shell, a sporty corduroy collar, and a quilted, tartan plaid cotton lining.

Note: This coat is not waterproof, and unlike some of the jackets on this list, there is no leash attachment hole. We reviewed this coat in size medium, and found it ran small (way too small, and short, for our border collie model). We ended up finding a nice fit on a 24 pound mini schnauzer.

As with any piece of dog clothing, be sure to measure your dog before ordering to determine the best fit. If you’re not sure where to start, check out our handy guide, How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness, Clothes, and Costumes.

A quilted, warmer version of the classic field coat from trusted dog and outdoor outfitter, Orvis. Its weather-resistant waxed cotton shell and warm microfleece liner makes it a warmer, more winter-ready alternative to the Barbour. We tested this in size small, and found it ran true to size (our shopping editor’s average-sized senior beagle was well covered and snug).
