Mohave and Nellie are a bonded pair of Lab mixes found fending for themselves on the hot streets of Phoenix in the fall of 2008. A woman had been feeding the 6-month-old puppies for more than a month when she decided to contact a local rescue group for help. Although the dogs were rescued, it’s now almost 10 years later and these two adorable seniors lack a forever home to call their own. Their current rescue is determined to find them a home before their next birthday.
At the time of their rescue, the dogs were extremely fearful of humans and had been in survival mode, so the rescue group thought it best to humanely trap them to ensure they were caught safely.
The puppies were most likely born on the streets. Mohave, the male, had no use of his right hind leg, but he and Nellie, the female, obviously had a very strong will to live.
Following their rescue, the dogs were brought to a veterinarian who found them healthy but malnourished. Although fearful, they were not aggressive. Mohave’s leg was shattered from an old injury that had not healed properly. The vet did not amputate as Mohave used the leg for balance and showed no signs of pain or discomfort.
Mohave and Nellie initially had a long road ahead of them and needed to learn how to trust and become family pets. Learning to socialize was an important step.
At first, the dogs went into a foster home situation that lasted four years. However, due to their extreme fear, the dogs never went inside the home, instead preferring to stay in the backyard. The foster family then moved, leaving Mohave and Nellie with nowhere to go, so the dogs ended up going from one boarding facility to another with short-term foster homes in between.
As they went from facility to facility year after year, almost a decade passed. Not one adoption application. Not one phone call showing interest. Even though they received tons of love from volunteers and caretakers, they had no home.
Finally, the dogs were taken under the wing of Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Lucky Dog Rescue, and the organization is on a mission to find the dogs a true home together. Currently at Second Home Pet Resort in Phoenix, this pair is getting extra socialization. Their caretakers hope it’s their last stop before their forever home.
