I growl with frustration at myself in the mirror. Darn my short coat—it just won’t stop shedding, and darn my pet parent for subjecting me to this ordeal. I should be preparing for the dog show, which is next week, and yet here I am trying to lick my coat into submission. I must not roll in something stinky. I must not roll in something stinky. Reciting this mantra several times, I attempt, once more, to control myself. I scratch my ear in exasperation and gaze at the muscular, grey-coated dog with light amber eyes in a noble face staring back at me, and give up. My only option is to allow a collar to be placed around my neck and hope that I look semi-presentable.
– From 50 Shades of Grey Ghosts by Y.R. Weimaraner
Okay, we confess: the book isn’t real. But there’s nothing fictional about the wonderful, loveable Weimaraner! Weimaraners, nicknamed “the grey ghost” for their steely coat, are strong, active, breathtaking dogs.
There are at least 50 reasons Weimies rule, but we’ll start with 12 reasons to love a Weimaraner:
1. They’re beautiful, and they know it
Weimeraners are notoriously confident, and can you blame them? Get a load of those steely good looks!
2. Those eyes that seem to see right through you
Weimaraners are known for their piercing eyes in amber, grey, and blue-grey shades.
3. They’re excellent at blending in…
Grey is a neutral, darling. According to the American Kennel Club’s breed standard, Weimaraners should be “short, smooth and sleek, solid color, in shades of mouse-gray to silver-gray.” You can rest easy knowing your Weimie will never clash with the couch (or the cat)!
4. …yet always stand out in a crowd
With their athletic silhouette and intense stare, Weimaraners cut a distinct figure in public.
5. A Weimaraner is a running partner at the ready
Weimaraners are ready to go-go-go-go-go! These active dogs need a lot of exercise, and Runner’s World magazine ranks them among the “top running dogs.”
6. They’re as graceful in water as they are on land
Weimaranars were bred to hunt across all terrain, and their webbed feet mean they can speed through the water. Of course, not every dog will take to water, but chances are your Weimie will jump at the chance to swim.
7. They know the alphabet better than you
These smart, loyal dogs will do just about anything for the people they love. Artist William Wegman made a career out of dressing up and posing his beloved Weimaraners, and even helped children learn their A-B-C’s in a series of short films for Sesame Street.
8. Weimaraner puppies are as cute as it gets
Can you even? We can’t even!
9. They’re scary-smart and eager to learn
Weimaraners are keenly intelligent, and need to be kept busy, so set that brain to work with training.
10. Even royalty bows before the Weimaraner
Weimaraners have been favored by nobles since their origin in the early 19th century. Here’s Grace Kelly, the American movie star turned Princess of Monaco, with her beloved grey ghost.
11. They’re total goofballs
Despite their regal background, Weimaraners are capable of being royally silly.
12. Weimaraners can fly
Okay, we may be indulging in a bit more fiction, but you have to admit, there’s something magical about these dogs.
Whether you’re a Weimaraner novice or a seasoned expert, we’re sure you’ll agree: These tall, dark, handsome dogs truly dominate. What do you love best about Weimies? Let us know in the comments!
