Social work grad student. I've fostered for several rescues in the area although I don't have a dog of my own.
I grew up with dogs and my family just adopted a lab. I'm available during the day and live near a great dog park. I also lease a horse in Potomac MD and can supply cat, dog, or horse care.
I'm a full time graduate student in social work thus I have socially conscious leanings towards man, woman, and beast. My part time internship, sadly unpaid, is at a hospital working in inpatient psychiatry. I will graduate in May with my MSW.
I half lease a quarter horse (that sounds like math but it isn't) in MD. She dearly loves being groomed, eating candy canes, and jumping. I plan on becoming a certified equine facilitated mental health therapist. I'm also interested in animal assisted therapy in general. It can be hard to get a horse to visit psych inpatient, much as it might benefit them. My cat passed away from cancer in the fall so I am taking some time off from cat ownership.
My apartment is a 4th floor walk up/one bedroom in Adams Morgan, not far from the dog park. I love going over there and socializing with the other dogs and owners. I've even gotten a few dates out of it! Who knew. I have fostered dogs in the past for several local rescues, Homeward Trails, Lucky Dog, etc.
I also grew up with many animals including a springer spaniel, a welsh corgi, and a yellow lab. My family, up in MA, adopted a beautiful black lab this year. My mother recently informed me that he has started sleeping in bed with them.
I can go to your place and stay there, or just check in on feeding and walking if it's local, or have your pet crash with me. Because of the stairs in my apartment, if your dog is too big for me to carry up the stairs and is very arthritic, this may not be the best match.
As a grad student, I have some, albeit limited, day time hours available and living alone, it is easy for me to spend evenings elsewhere. I would actually prefer to dog sit in your home. Mine is a 4th floor walk up which is difficult for some older dogs who may be arthritic and does not have a yard.
It is also helpful to know about any behavioral issues on which you might be working. I don't mean extreme behaviors like biting, for example maybe you're trying to keep your pet off the furniture or from begging. Because I'm a big softy and a plaintive look from a pet is all it takes for me to move over on the couch or let them sleep in my bed.
I was born into a dog-loving family and only spent brief periods dog-less. All of our pets lived through their entire lifespan, puppy to elderly, and I played a role in their care. I've also fostered with local rescues. My cat recently passed away from cancer and at this point the only animal in my life is the horse I half lease.
I'd like to know about any medical conditions, relevant medications and administration schedule, any aggressive behavior, how does your dog get along with other dogs, favorite toys and activities, LEAST favorite toys and activities, itchy spots, and anything else you think I should know. Is your dog allowed on the furniture? Does he or she sleep in bed with you? I'm a big softy and although I don't feed dogs when they beg....I do let them on the couch/bed.
Yes, I have a car.
Yes. Pills, creams, etc.
Right now my schedule varies a bit but I'm never gone more than 845-515. I commute to Sibley via car. When I have a dog staying with me, I like to be a proper host and plan activities that they can join. Once, we did a "DC Scandal Walk" tour of the city.
At least 3 walks a day. I like to go to the dog park at least once and do some homework reading at the picnic tables while the dogs play. Length of walk really depends on the dog. In warm weather, social dogs have joined me for outdoor "yappy hours" at places like Chief Ike's. They seem to really like all the attention - wouldn't we all? I live in a row house with neighbors of the same age and sometimes they'll take the dogs for a walk or just have them hang out while they watch tv.
No back yard, I live in a row house.
I've had dogs sleep in my bed, on the couch, or in their beds. Whatever the owner feels is appropriate and the dog likes.
I like going to the Adams Morgan dog park or just strolling around the neighborhood. We have nice tree lined streets. I've also taken dogs out to Potomac before, near where I ride, where there there are a lot of trails and a creek that feeds into the Potomac River. It's always about 15 degrees cooler there during the summer.

I've administered medications such as pills or liquids. But I will only house sit dogs in my home who are house trained. Due to being in a 4th floor walk up with fairly steep steps to enter the building, this may not be a good match for arthritic pets although I can care for them in your home. And if they're ok with it, I can just pick up small dogs.
I regularly house/cat sit for the same woman, albeit not through this site. In addition, I have your typical small one bedroom so an extremely large or energetic dog may find this to be insufficient space. I also do not have any outdoor area, like many in the city, although the Adams Morgan dog park isn't far.

Sure.
I am pretty flexible. I'd like to spend at least an hour to get a good walk in and possibly visit the dog park. This all depends on the dog's age and activity level of course. Some might want to just have company for a bit in the home. Maybe a hike on the weekend or I'll bring your dog out to a yappy hour or something if you're ok with that.
