Description:

Hi there! My name is Rachel and I love furry things. I am a current college student studying veterinary medicine. I have over three years of professional experience in the animal handling/care field. However, my personal level of experience dates back to childhood. I'm a lover of all animals and have cared for many different types throughout my lifetime.

I'm very reliable and commit to something, wholeheartedly, when my word is given. I'm active and live within walking distance from a great neighborhood park. I'm also a short drive away from the Riverside Dog Bark and Lady Bird Lake.

I rescued a yellow Lab mix named Crickett from the first veterinary clinic I worked for and trained her from home. She's a great dog who loves to swim and play with children and other dogs. I also have a cat named Bucket. I'm open to sitting cats and dogs of any breed, as long as they're pet friendly.

If your dog is kennel trained, I have a large kennel that can be made available for use.

I will walk your dog daily, up to 3 short walks(rain or shine) around my complex and one long walk in the park that's located down the street. If your pet is an older pet, we'll move at his/her pace. Feeding will be done twice daily, unless specified otherwise.

I'm certified in canine/feline CPR and first aid and am comfortable giving any medication(s), including sub-q fluids. I am also insured by Rover for up to $2,000 in emergency veterinary care and up to $10,000 medical liability for any one person.

Your pets care should be your top priority. My availability is open throughout the school year, so let me take care of your loved one today!

About Rachel S.:

I'm an active Austinite who loves animals, the greenbelt and a good breakfast taco. I was born in South Austin in the early 80's and haven't lived north of the river since.

I began my career with animals in my early 20s when I found a 2 day old kitten and decided to rescue her. Her eyes were still closed and her feet were deformed due to curling in the womb. For weeks I woke up every three hours to bottle feed, stimulate and gently massage her feet. After all my hard work and dedication she is now living a normal, healthy life and her feet appear as if nothing was wrong with them to begin with. Needless to say, I have stuck with the same career since.

About a year ago I decided to take the plunge and enrolled in a two year veterinary technology program. Seeing that I will be an active student throughout the year, I will have open availability and plenty of time to enjoy the company of your companion.

I have several years of experience in training, caring for and medicating both dogs and cats alike and would love to take care of yours today.

How long have you been a dog lover? Tell us about your history with dogs.

When I was a little girl we had a Great Pyrenees who let me ride her like a horse. Let's just say, my love for dogs began at a very young age.

What would you like to know about a dog before sitting him or her? Do you have any breed preferences?

Any dog that I sit must be vaccinated OR titer tested. They must also be on a flea preventative. Seeing that I have a very social Labrador, your dog must be well behaved and social. I also have an indoor only cat, so your dog MUST BE CAT FRIENDLY!!!

Do you have reliable transportation in the event of an emergency?

Yes. I am also familiar with the many EC and Veterinary Clinics in town.

Are you comfortable administering medication?

Yes. I am comfortable administering ANY medication, i.e. oral, topical, sub-q fluids etc.

How much time do you plan on spending with my dog each day?

If I am sitting your pet I will spend the over 90% of my time with them excluding, Tuesday 7-10pm and Wednesday 4-7pm, during which time I will be in class. Otherwise, almost all events will be scheduled around them. Some might include, going to the greenbelt or out to eat at a restaurant that has a dog friendly porch.

If you have a backyard, please describe it.

I'm on the second floor and the patio is large, shaded and overlooks a crystal clean pool which is frequented by people of all ages. There are plenty of trees and I have two bird feeders, which I fill every other day.

Where will my dog sleep?

Your dog may sleep in bed with me or in the safety of a kennel. It's really up to you and them.

Where will you take my dog on walks? Tell me about it.

Shorter walks will be done around the apartment (rain or shine). Longer walks will be done at Mabel Davis Park, which is located down the street from my apt. (approximately 1.5 miles there and back). On weekends, with your consent, a trip to the dog bark will usually take place.

Rachel was so great with my doggy friend! I was stuck in a bind for the weekend and Rachel came to the rescue! She sent me updates and pictures throughout the weekend, it made me feel so much better knowing that Winston was safe and having a blast! Once we picked him up and got him home he was passed out from all the fun! If I ever go out of town again and can't take my pets with me I know the first person I will be calling! (Collapse)

My puppy had a wonderful time with Rachel and her lab. He came home tired from his day playing with them. Her service was excellent and I never worried about my puppy when I was away.

I had seen Rachel walking her dog & noticed how much joy they had with each other & how well-behaved her dog was. I asked if she house sat dogs & she said she did. She stayed at my house for the weekend & took care of my 5 dogs, 2cats, and a fish. When I came home the pets were all happy. Not only did she take care of the pets, she also cleaned my kitchen! The pets were upset to see her leave. Next time I'm gone, I won't hesitate to use Rachel. (Collapse)

I have known Rachel for a long time, and one thing I can say is that she loves animals. If she owned 10 acres she would rescue every needy animal in sight. She takes really good care of her animals too. She accepts her responsibilities towards them. They are a part of her family. She takes them out for walks and includes them in social events wherever possible. They are like her children. All you have to see are all of her photos of them to understand that. She knows a lot about animal health, nutrition, and medical care. She has worked in animal clinics, animal hospitals, pet stores, and is currently studying to be a vet tech. I know she is at the top of her classes. She really wants to make animal care her life's work. Richard (Collapse)
