Mahana’s B & B + Photography

Pet care experience

*** We are currently in the middle of a massive basement restoration project. It's stressful for all of us, Mahana included. For this reason, we are unable to host any new guests at this time. HOWEVER, we are ALWAYS available for meet and greets as well as photo sessions. We would love to get to know your family, even if you haven't made any travel plans.** We are currently accepting reservations to host your pooch. Call us because availability is limited to one guest at a time or two small pack-mates. It’s hard to be separated from your pack, for this reason, we focus on personalized home stays so our guests become like family. Your visit will be filled with many activities: car rides, walking, visits to the dog park, playtime, puzzles, lots of socializing, photo updates, and sleep. We cater to the active dog. After every visit, we’ll send you home with a doggy bag filled with treats including a few high resolution action photos by our professional, full time staff photographer. Travis and I are animal lovers with a spayed Boston Terrier, Mahana. She LOVES other dogs and playtime. We live close to Gabriel Park and Multnomah Village. We frequently enjoy patio brunches with our furry friends. Our neighborhood is dog loving. I work from home so your dog will never be alone. About this sitter: I am a 33 year young artist and business owner who works from home. My sidekick is a 3 year old Boston Terrier, Mahana. We want to help you feel good about leaving your fur-kid with us so you can have peace of mind and enjoy your trip, vacation, or tend to a family emergency. Why I love dog sitting I am part farm-kid and part city-kid. There can be some actual advantages to having divorced parents :o). I grew up with dogs, mostly herding/work dogs (Border Collies and Queensland Heelers). I am 100% animal lover. I've raised horses, cows, sheep, goats, fledglings, rabbits, cats, dogs the whole gamut really. My stepmom worked as a Vet Tech for a Wildlife Animal Rescue Center/Vet in California. We were always rescuing animals growing up. After I left home, I traveled a lot, went to Peace Corps Paraguay as an Agriculture Volunteer (raised a pack of kittens--all of which made it back to the U.S), worked in Guatemala City with disadvantaged youth, and then went to graduate school at the University of Arizona. It wasn't until after I finished graduate school, that my partner Travis and I, were finally in a position to add a permanent member to our family. Our adoption application and home visit were approved by the Southern Arizona Boston Terrier Rescue Center. We have had Mahana for about a year now and she is the best. We've recently relocated from the heat of the desert to the effervescent greens of Portland, OR. Meet my pets We're located in SW Portland (near Gabriel Park), We can't wait to host in our new home. Our home is carpet free, so if an accident happens, it's an easy clean up. We do have stairs and our floors can be slippery (a warning if your dog has any serious hip or arthritis issues that would prevent him or her from staying up on all fours). Our yard is huge and will be completely fenced in before the end of Summer 2015. We believe that our pets are our family and that's how we will treat you and your family. About my yard We have a huge beautiful backyard with grass, mature trees, and a covered porch where your pup can choose between sun, shade, or keeping dry. Our yard will be fully fenced by the end of Summer 2015.

Ashley and Mahana and Travis are AMAZING!! They took such good care of Homer, our labradoodle: this was Homer's first stay with an 'unknown' family (he has always stayed with friends before). Homer warmed up to Ashley immediately (she is like the dog whisperer!) and loved playing with Mahana on the first meeting. Ashely completely understood how nervous we were and even met us a second time to familiarize Homer with them and their lovely home before we left him there for a week. We had a great vacation, and getting daily updates with super cute photos of Homer playing/sitting in the car/sleeping/eating was such a nice touch. Ashley gave Homer lots of exercise, love, and made sure he obeyed rules in the house: we could not have asked for a better time for Homer. When we picked him up she also had an amazing goody bag filled with organic treats/toys. We will be back soon :) Sumi

My little guy had a great stay at Mahana's B&B! I really appreciated Travis and Ashley's thoroughness and attentiveness even before my pup got there. It was great that they took him out and about, and he got lots of exercise. The awesome photos and updates throughout his stay were a bonus! My pup came home happy and tired. I would definitely consider Mahana's B&B in the future!

We really enjoyed meeting Ashley and Mahana and would trust them to care for our dog anytime. Ashley displayed great judgment and concern for Logan's well-being, and was honest and up-front with us about her concerns regarding his behavior with another dog she was sitting, which we appreciated greatly. Logan looks forward to his next stay at Mahana's!

We couldn't have asked for a more amazing sitter for Olive! Ashley, Travis and Mahana took care of our pup like she was one of the pack, and even took some fantastic professional photos! We were constantly kept updated via txt and photos which helped us relax and enjoy our vacation. When we picked Olive up, you could tell that she had the best time ever! Thanks for making our first sitting experience so perfect!

Information Ashley R. would like to know about your pet

We are open to any breed that likes other dogs, that is all that really matters. If your dog is people shy or anxious in general we COMPLETELY understand. Our girl had a rough time before she was re-homed with us. We can help integrate your fur-kid in with our "pack" and hopefully help relieve your anxiety about leaving your baby with us. The only thing we need to know is everything you want us to know.

A typical day

Here's where we'll take our walks We usually go to Gabriel Park or Council Crest Park, where the dogs and people are great. We do switch it up sometimes and head into Marquam Nature Park or other hiking spots. When we go on walks we start with sniffing around and going potty for a few minutes and then we do a pretty "strict" leash walk where we move with "purpose." Sometimes, Mahana walks with a backpack to make the walk even more focused. Whatever your dogs needs we can do, ie. less intensity, more intensity, or even running is fine with us. If we eat out we take the dogs and sit on the patio. If we run short errands on a rainy or cool day we also take the dogs. If we run errands within walking distance then we take the dogs, too. But, only if Travis and I are together so one of us can stay outside with the dogs. We will never leave (y)our dog tied up anywhere--it stresses me out! Your dog's sleeping arrangement Your dog will sleep wherever they feel most comfortable, under the covers with ours, on the bed, in their crate or dog bed. Time I'll spend with your dog All day! I have the luxury of working from home. We are all about walks, puzzles and play. We always take our girl with us wherever we go, that's one of the main reasons we moved to this neighborhood and why we love Portland so much! This place is dog-friendly--it's amazing! Mahana's favorite breakfast place is the Tin Shed.
